Inner Journey Work and Trauma

A framework designed to assist survivors in dealing with challenges and navigating triggers at each step of the journey.

Inner journey work based on understanding trauma is not about making the traumatic experience ‘disappear’ from a person’s memory, it’s not about making a person forget what happened or stop having feelings about the trauma. The aim of this work is to give individuals the tools to handle stress and reduce the effects of trauma.

Healing from trauma might involve a transformation, finding meaning, and working towards feeling safe and more capable.

Trauma affects our body, thoughts, feelings, actions, and how we relate to the world, and these effects can be obvious or subtle. That's why there are many different treatments to help with these effects. It's important to know that something might work for one person at a certain time, but might not work for someone else, or even for the same person at a different time.

In this toolkit, we provide several paths that a survivor can choose for their journey. These paths can be emotionally and physically challenging, overwhelming, triggering, and tiring. The framework below is designed to assist in dealing with these challenges and help a person navigate triggers at each step of the journey.

The four tools

to get ready for a possible trigger.

to use during a triggering event.

to calm oneself down post a triggering event.

to use on a regular basis.
